Making a Decision

I have been in business for a long time and have sold hundreds of franchises. Over the years, a number of friends and acquaintances have asked me to share my limited wisdom and look at various franchise and business opportunities with them. I am happy to do that, but I say this with a chuckle, because I have one particular friend in mind.

In the last 10 to 15 years, this one friend has asked me to look at 20 to 25 different franchise and business opportunities with him. Some franchises were new and some were long-term and well-established. They ran the gamut for price, and diversity. Thus far, he hasn’t chosen any of them.

I liked and was impressed with a number of the franchises he was considering. However, he found something wrong with every single one of them - they were too expensive, they weren’t expensive enough, they were too new, they had too much competition, the training was too long or two short, etc. He either couldn’t make a decision, didn’t really want to be in business for himself in the first place or he was afraid of failing. Because I know this person well, I think he has trouble making decisions (you should see him try and order from a menu) and he’s afraid to fail.

There are no guarantees in life or business. However, if you have a good business model and a good business plan (not perfect but good) you can put yourself in a position of high-probability for success. That is all you can hope for. Make a decision and give it your all. No one plans to fail and no one should expect to fail, but if you do. Start over. A high-probability of success means just that.

And now for my biggest decision of the day: should I take a nap now or later? Keep smiling. It gets you through the day.

Best regards, H. R. Mason
